Since 2012, I have listened to hundreds of hours of RPG podcasts. The school group fizzled out, but from there I was able to create a group of faculty and staff for a home game, which allowed my wife to participate without needing a sitter for our daughter. Over the next three years or so, I played D&D, both as a player and a DM, with college students and various faculty and staff. As Mike was preparing to move, Phil and Tyler, students at the local community college where I teach, started up a game in the school library. So, in two years, I’d lost two gamemasters. A couple months later, Mike approached me about playtesting a game he was creating, which he later successfully Kickstarted ( THIS DEFIANT EARTH: 1950s Sci-Fi Movie Roleplaying! ). His current group was playing D20 Modern and did not have a place for me. The following year I approached the husband of woman I worked with about D&D and asked to join his group. My return to the world of RPGs was a short unfinished campaign of Dresden Files in the summer of 2012 that ended with the gamemaster moving. Not enough to really give it a chance, but it did not really click with me. I picked up copies of 4e very late in its life cycle. I missed out on the 3.5 years and most of 4e years, including the introduction of Pathfinder. So I was on hiatus starting in 2003 through 2012 or so. It did not help that the idea of re-buying all the books for 3.5 made me angry. Somewhere around the time of 3.5, my friends and I lost interest in D&D. By the time, 3e hit I was the DM most of the time. We played a lot of Ravenloft and Planescape. Things really took off for us with release of AD&D Second Edition. Darren’s mom had eased up after she saw that role-playing games were just games. ![]() I think he wanted it to be Dungeons and Dragons, but his mom was apprehensive about the Satanic Panic and did not want him involved. It was 1984 or 1985, when my friend, Darren, introduced me to the TSR game Top Secret. I later shortened it for ease and to symbolize my connection to the D&D and RPG communities to DMRule. Several years ago, I was teaching the concept of Descartes’ Rule of Signs and it occurred to me that RuleofSigns made a great username. ![]() I have two masters degrees one in mathematics and the other in sociology. I am married with two daughters under the age of five years old. I live in small town in Kansas, where I teach math at a local community college.
